Surprise....

I remember that dawn when my phone rang @ 4;30am, and I must say the hello tune was so soothing that instead of waking up to pick the call, I began to feel drowsy, so the phone kept ringing. The song was in Arijit's voice that says "Mahi mainu chhadyo naa, Ke tere bin dil naiyo lagna, Jithe vi tu chalna ae, Maahi main tere pichhe pichhe chalna". And if you don't know about his magical melody, then let me clear that his voice will either make you feel broken or sleepy. So I enjoyed my sleep with my soft cushion and warm blanket. But once again, the ringing started, and this time I shouted...

Di..di.. Can you please check my phone? I don't know who is calling me so early in the morning, Please check it, ha...I took a gasp and slept again. I barely remember a pat on my shoulder, I think my sister was saying something but I didn't respond and continued my sleep.

(After few hours)

I woke up at 7;30am, and with rubbing eyes and a heavy voice, I asked di about the call. Who was calling me so early in the morning di? Was that an emergency call? Is everything alright? I threw a series of questions. 

Hold on, hold on! It was Disha. I asked her several times why she called this early in the morning, but she denied it and just said, "Shivam se baat karni thi." I guess it might be necessary or special, she smiled and answered 

Don't... don't smile like this, it will be important obviously and nothing else, I replied and turned around. By the way, my phone was not on the table; where is it now? I shouted while turning around. 

I put it in my room. "Baat kar le kya pata propose karna ho usse" (go and talk, who knows she might be thinking of proposing you), she again started her silly notion to tickle me. But to be very honest, this time, her words sparked joy within me, so I whispered "I wish" and acted like I was avoiding her.

Keep saying, madam, there is nothing like that, I replied. But deep inside, my heart was saying, "I wish something happened like this," and with a smiling face, I entered her room. 

I took my phone and called her, but she didn't answer. Why is she not receiving the call? I called her twice, but the result was the same as before. I left the phone and started woolgathering like, "Does she want to propose me?" yeah, oh my god, but wait, she could have called me at any time for this. Why so early? Maybe she is in a problem, but why did she say "Shivam se baat karni thi." She could have said this to di as well. What can be the cause? Maybe she could not control her feelings or want to surprise me. She would have decided to call me early in the morning to confess her love for me. Yeah, this is the possible reason. With such a series of questions, I started blushing and feeling nervous. 

Shivam...Get fresh beta, don't get stuck in the phone all the time. You already woke up late today, Maa's voice suddenly broke my castle of thoughts, and I shouted, "yaa maa, good morning" give me a sec; I will do everything. 

Again, I tried, and as the phone started ringing, my hands were also started shivering, but somehow I managed it and gained the confidence. The phone did not answer yet, and her hello tune continued, "I love you..tuuu, ruuu,tuu,ruuu...". To reduce my nervousness, I also started singing, "I love you..."

Hello, Disha answered. 

"I love you...tuu,ruu,ruu" I didn't realize that she picked the call and kept singing

Kya bol raha hai (What are you saying?), She shouted 

Aaah...I-I- I was singing the song. Hello, hello... Disha

Idiot...Hii. Where were you in the morning? I called you several times; she asked

I was busy with my work so badly, and di has taken the phone, so I could not talk to you; I lied

Ohhh, so you were busy inside the blanket, and yaa di has picked your call, you liar, She shouted.

God knows, what important work you do inside the blanket, she laughed 

Fuck, Noooooooo, Hmm I was sleeping, and so I avoided it. Sorry, I replied

It's okay, she replied and continued, okk leave this curb and hear me. I have something very important to say today, but I don't know how you will react; she slowed down her voice while saying this.

The moment she said, " how will you react" I felt butterflies in my stomach as all my assumptions seemed to come true. I took time and then replied, don't overthink, Disha, you can share everything with me. Now, go ahead. 

Would you like to guess? She asked

Well, can I get some hints? I replied

Aaah...Okay. So when you hear it, you will be pleased but a bit emotional too. So this was your hint, and now its your turn to answer. She replied 

Is she going to confess today? Nothing can be well more than this, oh god! Thank you so much, I mumbled.

Well, I am not coming with any specific answer. Break this suspense and tell me now, I replied

So Shivam, all I wanted to say that..that, She stopped 

com'on go ahead, Please Disha, I quickly replied 

Okay, okay, So I wanted to say that I am about to marry post two months; she excitedly replied

I went numb and was completely blank. 

Hello, hello, hello, Shivam. You there?? She called thrice 

Yaa...yaa. I am all here. It was a network problem. Cong..congratulations Disha. By the way, when this all happened. I don't remember you ever talked about this before. I replied and tried to manage my emotions.

I am sorry Shivam for this, forgive me, she pleaded. Her voice made me melt as always, and so I replied silently, " it's okay."

But you know I thought to surprise you, so I decided not to reveal it. Yesterday, he came with his family, and you understand further that parents' talk. I am feeling a little nervous now or maybe overexcited, I don't know, but this is not a normal feeling...hehe, She giggled when she completed. 

It happens, Disha, I replied slowly.

Hmm, She replied and continued, hey, I forgot to mention one more special thing that will make you feel how much Disha cares and loves Shivam. 

I whispered, now what else is left to mention, Disha. What is it? I replied 

I especially requested them to fix the marriage date on your birthday, 26 November; she excitedly answered. 

(She was pleased that time and I genuinely did not want to ruin her happiness. She had no idea how much this heart has a love for her, but what could I do than to remember the time we spent together. Sometimes, I thought of saying everything, but just one thought that never let me do this is that if she had a feeling, why did she not mention it. All these thoughts started coming simultaneously, and I forgot that Disha was on the call. Suddenly)  

Hello...Shiv, You there? Hello, She asked. 

Yes..yes, thank you for this beautiful surprise Disha. I won't forget this birthday ever in my life. I am so happy and emotional as well, I replied 

Don't be emotional, and no need to thank, idiot. You are always special to me and will be forever. Love you, Shivam. You have to come anyhow, no ifs and buts. Ok, I have some work. Take care, She said

Yaa...Lov...Take care, Disha, I replied and cut the call

Is it the same morning as it was a few hours ago?? I was so happy a few moments back, and now everything is shattered. I wanted to scream out and cry aloud, but I could not as I was not in the mood to answer any question of di and maa over this. 

I took my phone out, but as I always say, there is nothing end-to-end encrypted in any social media platform. They know everything from what we talk to what we feel. I was on Instagram feed, and instead of reels and comedy videos, many quotes were there. " You broke my heart but I still love with all the pieces," " Sometimes life is all about letting go the things you love," and many more fucking quotes. I switched off the phone and slept again.

Maa, I have to attend a marriage tomorrow, so I'll not be free in the evening; saying this, I took the pillow and turned around her. 

All the clothes are old now; I'll buy a new one, I whispered

Are you going to someone's wedding? Whose? She asked

Aaah...one of my friend from college. You don't know her, I answered 

Okay. Disha ke saath jaa raha hai naah? ( You are going with Disha?), She asked

Why maa? Why should she suppose to be with me? Why should I go with her? I looked into her eyes and asked

Because beta(son), she takes care of you, and you both look so good together like a true friend. Whenever you are with her, I feel so free and relaxed; she replied while caressing my hair

For a moment, I kept quiet and then "She is not going with me, maa" I broke the silence

Why? She frowned 

I mean, she will join me at marriage directly. I'll meet her there, I replied
Perhaps for the last time, I whispered and kept my hand across her stomach and hugged her. 

Ohhh...okay, she nodded and caressed my hair again.

"Disha Weds Pratik" I saw this written at the top of the marriage hall.

A part of me was sinking from inside, but to keep my promise, maybe for the last time, I entered.
